Upswing for women’s soccer program continues

The women’s soccer program continues to move forward with its second straight appearance in the Region IV final four. In those two years, the Panthers are 16-6-4 and have moved up with the ladder in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference with a third-place showing in 2012 and a runner-up finish in 2013.

It’s a long way from 2011, when the Panthers were 1-11-1.

“We were nowhere in 2011, somewhere in 2012 and second in the conference in the 2013,” Morton College women’s soccer coach Alex Cano said. “We’re taking pride in doing it with local players, but we’re starting to draw interest from players all over the United States wanting to play at Morton College.”

A number of this year’s Morton College standouts are attracting interest from four-year schools. Scoring standout Karen Santos is being courted by Cardinal Stritch University, University of St. Francis and Lewis University. Robert Morris University Chicago has inquired about forwards Raquel Salinas and Kim Gingell. Defender Isabel Guzman, who Cano called, “the heart and soul of our defense,” is being looked at by several NCAA Division III programs.

“These four players have helped put our program on the map,” Cano said, “and are responsible for the success we’ve had.”
