Women’s soccer opens campaign with 2-OT thriller victory

The Morton College women’s soccer team opened its season on a thrilling note as Raquel Salinas’ goal off an assist from Alicia Herrera three minutes into the second overtime lifted the Panthers to a 1-0 Illinois Skyway College Conference win over Waubonsee August 28 in Cicero.

Forwards Karen Santos and Kimberly Gingell had many close calls to end the game, according to Morton College coach Alex Cano. Santos had 10 shots on goal and Gingell, four. Diana Madrigal and Mariah Borjas also helped Morton College (1-0-0 overall and in the Illinois Skyway) keep the offensive pressure on.

Cano credited defenders Karla Reza, Isabel Guzman and Roxana Figueroa for their performance. Goalie Rebecca Fuentes turned away five shots to get the shutout win.

“It was a very tough fought game,” Cano said. “The way the game was played, it could have been anyone’s game.”
