Rights and Responsibilities

As a student with a disability, you have, by law, certain rights and responsibilities. In addition, the Coordinator of Student Disability Services and Faculty members have certain rights and responsibilities. Please review the rights and responsibilities listed below.

The Coordinator of Student Disability Services has the right and responsibility to:

  • Request appropriate documentation of a disability and need for accommodation.
  • Deny immediate requests for accommodations if the student has not honored timelines or
    given adequate notification of need.
  • Provide reasonable and appropriate accommodations.
  • Provide auxiliary aids and services as appropriate.
  • Inform faculty of medical/safety concerns.
  • Act as an advocate for students.

Students have the right to:

  • Appropriate accommodations for their disability
  • Equal access to an education
  • Confidentiality
  • Equal and fair treatment

Students have the responsibility to:

  • Be their own advocate
  • Disclose relevant information regarding their disability.
  • Initiate all services in a timely manner.
  • Schedule tutoring and exams in the Independent Learning Center (Building C, Room 236).
  • Meet each semester with the Coordinator of Student Disability to review your academic plan.

Faculty have the right and responsibility to:

  • Ask for verification of disability/eligibility from the Coordinator of Student Disability.
  • Consult with the Coordinator of Student Disability and ILC staff as appropriate to assist in providing
    reasonable and appropriate accommodations.
  • Expect students with disabilities to meet the same academic standards as their peers.
  • Provide classroom materials in alternative format when requested.
  • Work collaboratively with the Coordinator of Student Disability to provide appropriate and timely
    academic accommodations for their courses.
  • Provide accessible times that the student with a disability can meet to discuss academic
    needs, accommodations and services.
  • Indicate time-allotted (time and one half) on tests sent to the ILC.
