How to Become a Tutor

Tutors must have a high school diploma or equivalent, be at least 18 years old and communicate effectively in English. To become a volunteer, a potential tutor must either attend an orientation session, or meet with Project CARE staff individually. Then, he or she will attend 12 hours of training. We ask that a tutor make a minimum one year time commitment and provide 90 minutes of instruction per week.

After completing the 12 hour training, a volunteer can choose to tutor:
• An individual
• In an Adult Education classroom
• A small group of two to eight students
• In a drop-in lab setting

The volunteer can choose to tutor English as a Second Language or Adult Basic Education (native English speaking) students.
