Off-Campus Access To The Library

Off-Campus Access to SWAN (The Library Catalog)

Click Start My Research under Find Books & Articles and search SWAN to search for books held at Morton College Library and 70 other public and academic libraries in area. When you click on a title of an item that interests you, you may:

  • Find out which of the 70 libraries holds your book;
  • Read about the book before requesting it;
  • Request that it be sent to the Morton College Library by creating an account.

Go to https://swan.mls.lib.il.us/patroninfo~S1 to create an account.

With this account you may:

  • Request that books from other libraries be sent to the Morton College Library for you to pick up.
  • Renew items you have already checked out.
  • Pay your fines online.

If you have requested that a book be sent to the Morton College Library, you will receive a phone call when your material arrives. Materials can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks to arrive, depending on the lending library. Remember, Morton College Library users can not make requests for CDs, DVDs or other audio-visual materials.

If you have any questions about using SWAN, call the reference desk at 708-656-8000, x429 or email reference@morton.edu.

Off-Campus Access to Databases

To search for articles that are authoritative and reliable resources to complete your assignments, you need to search in a library database. The difference between searching on the internet (Google – where anyone can post anything without any research) and a scholarly database is that the articles you find here would have been reviewed by the experts in the field. You can access these databases from the library, Morton College’s computer labs, your home, or any internet accessible computer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Here’s how:

  1. Go to the Find Articles In Databases By Subject page under Find Books & Articles.
  2. Log on. You will be asked to provide your social security number, date of birth, and status (student or faculty/staff).
    Troubleshooting: SSN and date of birth are correct, but you cannot log in.
    Only currently registered students, faculty and staff can access our databases. If you cannot log in, please ask at the Library Help Desk so they can verify your status. Their phone number is 708-656-8000, x235
  3. Choose a database. Now you have a list of the library’s online databases arranged by subject and title. Browse these lists and click on the one that best suits your needs. If you are not sure where to start, Academic Search Premier or Expanded Academic ASAP are good general places to begin.

Disable pop-up blockers and make sure you browser accepts cookies if you have trouble browsing the databases. If you can’t open a particular database from home or it is asking for a login and password, call the Reference Librarian at (708) 656 8000 x429. Note that Lexis-Nexis is not available from off-campus.
