This course enables students to explore the triumphs and tragedies of
the Human Experience. The interconnections of history, philosophy, and
literature are presented in this introductory study. Topics include the
family in historical perspective, language, youth, the American national
character, human relations and rights, the human environment, myth and
mythology, morals, free will, religion and ethics. Interpretive reading
and critical thinking objectives are emphasized through class discussion
and written essays. Selected readings from historical texts, short
philosophical essays, drama, and fiction form the basis for discussion. A
variety of media is used to achieve course objectives. Lecture three
