English Placement: Multiple Measures

Incoming Morton College students may be placed directly into ENG 101 if they meet the following criteria:

These measures are acceptable for up to three (3) years.

Dev Ed English placement:

*The lower score leads placement. For example, if a student has a reading score of 250 (ENG 088) but a writing score of 240 (ENG 086), they should be placed in the lower-level course.

Students should meet with an advisor to discuss their placement. It is recommended that students who express interest in the co-req ENG 088/101 courses are aware of the intensive writing requirements.

  • Students who enroll in the English co-req course should also know:
    • Students must register for and attend both sections.
    • It is possible to successfully complete ENG 088 but not pass ENG 101
    • If a student fails ENG 088, they will not be able to pass ENG 101.
    • If a student drops one of the co-req courses, they will be required to drop both.

For advisors: the co-req is designed to have 10 students who are enrolled in both ENG 088 and 101. The remainder of the ENG 101 seats (14 out of a total 24 cap) are for students who have placed directly into ENG 101 or who have successfully completed ENG 088 in a previous semester.
